DEEDS BREWING TAPROOM UPDATE – DEC 2019
3D render of proposed taproom
Our last update was in April, we had 600 signatures then. We currently have 1153, thank you all so much for all the support, it means a lot to us.
Apologies for the long time between drinks in regards to updates, it’s been hectic at the brewery and we’ve been super busy making a lot of beer this year, particularly some big hazy IPAs you can check them all out on our at our shop.
As some of you may know, it’s been a long road with the taproom. We started the process back in July 2016 and got a refusal after going all the way to VCAT. You can read all about it here.
We are excited to tell you that we have re submitted our application for a taproom 2 weeks ago.
We’ve made some big changes to our application this time around with the hope for a much warmer reception from the objectors that objected to our previous application. We have reduced the number of patrons from 350 to 150 people and due to the much-reduced numbers of patrons and some changes in the planning regulations since last we applied, we no longer require a parking dispensation for the taproom. Parking was a major objection to our original planning application submission. We have tried very hard to please both council and locals by giving up much needed space for car parks. We have the required car parks on site for the taproom.
It is our hope that people do not drive to our brewery, if they do however, we have car parks for them. We will be highlighting that the train station is next door, and tram and bus is literally a stone throw away. Furthermore, we have a dedicated shared car space for uber/taxi and bike racks.
TIMELINE
We have now submitted all of the required planning application documentation to Council. Council have more recently come back to us with a request for further information. When Council are satisfied with our answers and the documentation we have provided, we will be required to advertise our application for a period of 2 weeks. During this period, the local businesses and residents will be notified and given the opportunity to object to our application. Depending on the number of objectors, the decision will either be made by the Council if there are less than 7 objectors, or it will be referred to the Councillors if there are more than 7 objectors.
If the decision is referred to the Councillors, they will then vote on our tap room application. If the majority vote to approve it, it will be approved and we will obtain a permit for the tap room.
However, if, as per our previous application, the Councillors vote to reject our application, we will have to go to VCAT to apply for the tap room, which will delay the whole application a further 6 months to a year.
Our hope is to avoid going to VCAT and to have the support of the Council and Councillors for our tap room. This is why it is so important to have local support.
IF YOU LIVE IN STONNINGTON
If you are local resident and feel passionately about having a Deeds Brewery tap room in Glen Iris, it is very worthwhile contacting the Councillors to let them know your views in support of our tap room. The Councillors would like to hear from you as you are their constituents. The Councillors that oversee our address are the East Ward Councillors, you can find them here.
MOVING FORWARD
Our hope is to update you on a regular basis with the progress on our tap room.
Ultimately, we look forward to the day when we can open our doors to the Glen Iris community and anyone far and wide who enjoys craft beer in an inclusive community environment offering excellent beer and food.
